The International Academy of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering A new instrument for recognizing the profession In keeping with its mission of improving the quality of life and global development, the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR) has established the International Academy of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (iAABE). The iAABE is composed of elected Fellows. The founding members of the academy are CIGR Fellows, with Professor Da-Wen Sun of University College Dublin being the first elected president. The focus of iAABE is to: • Recognize individuals distinguished by their scientific, professional, and entrepreneurial contributions to the field. These are individuals who have made exceptional contributions to advance agricultural and biosystems engineering in research, education, and industry. • Foster international cooperation and exchange of information. • Promote agricultural and biosystems engineering as a contributor to the solution of global problems. • Stimulate international education and training. • Create an identifiable body of competence that can provide input to policy, strategy, and decision making at the highest levels. Persons recognized as having established an outstanding reputation for their accomplishments and/or leadership in the discipline are eligible for election as an iAABE Fellow. Nominations for election as Fellow can be submitted to the Academy’s Executive Council during the twelve months leading up to a CIGR World Congress or International Conference. The CIGR Presidium or a Fellow of the Academy must sponsor a nomination to the Academy. CIGR is a worldwide umbrella organization for agricultural and biosystems engineering societies, private companies and public companies. Established in 1930 in Liege, Belgium, CIGR has 33 regional, national, and corporate members. ASABE is a member organization of CIGR. Three past presidents of CIGR were ASABE members.
